Bye Bye old paint!

This is probably the job we most desire to never do again. It was a lot of time and time in tyvek suits, full face respirators and vacuum sanding, then decontaminating and cleaning everything that was used.

Up until the point Kate found out it was lead paint, we touched then sanded, then it just had to be sanded all the way down to wood. Almost 90 years of paint adds up to a lot of work.

The primer starts!

The deck beams were sanded down to clean wood so we could varnish them. Makes for a nice contrast to the white paint.

2 coats of primer, 3 coats of sealer, 4 coats of paint that didn't quite work right, then 2 final coats of the right paint.

Kate starts the first coats of the first part of a 2 part varnish. The first part soaks into the wood like a oil to seal up the wood.

7 coats of varnish later...
Looking so much better already!
